Kara's Magazine Project.

So here is my finished product. I decided to do a local music/indie magazine titles "the know." I am really interested in the philadelphia music scene and nightlife and thought this would make for a good magazine. I wanted to keep the style simple yet a little unconventional. I was influenced by the magazine Vice and its typically simple and clean covers. I knew I wanted Man Man on the cover, a growing local band, but initially had a hard time finding a large enough photo to fill the entire background. I gave up and now I like how it only take up a little less than half of the background. Since the photo was so colorful I decided it would be eye catching enough and I should keep the text simple with white. However, I did switch up the font a bit. In the end I decided to make the magazine free and I can totally picture this as an insert in Philly Weekly or on a corner newsbox somewhere. Im really pleased with how it turned out.

Mya K. Douglas-Magazine Project

I chose to use brown, yellow and white colors because with the colors of her dress and the objects behind her, I feel these colors brought out the image more, but could still be seen very clearly. For the title text, I put a shadow around the word 'Style' to make it look like it was lifted off the page, so it wouldn't blend in too much with the white in the mirror. I feel Times New Roman was a simple text to use for some of my teasers because her dress ws already flashy and brought a lot of attention to the page. The angle of her pose is what I like most because you can see she is in a house, and she appears to be looking at someone, as if she is about to speak. That's all!!!

Danielle Wells Magazine Project

I made a magazine about pirates because I thought it would be a good play off of magazines like Cosmo, or Glamour...because it's the exact opposite. Yet, the subheads are just like the scandalous ones you'd find on glamour magazines, just about pirates.

The picture I chose was a picture I took when I was in Clearwater Florida. I was trying to find a picture that really gave an impression of the beach, and after trying to find one online, I decided that mine would be best. And it worked perfectly. I kept the sunset in the bottom right corner because I thought it worked well with the yellow circle...the circle covering it up because the magazine is about pirate happenings..not the sunset. I also liked the circle in the bottom corner because the lens flare I added to it, picks up the sunset lighting...making it almost look like the yellow circle is the sunset.

I used a lot of yellows because I thought that was the best contrast against the black, or really dark background. It was another way for me to portray the "opposite kind of magazine" through colors. I think that yellow is also the best color to really grab the reader...I'd pick this up if I were walking by.

Kim Roberts Magazine Project

I chose to make Phillies Weekly because you told us to choose something we're interested in and it will come out better. I really love sports, and I can't get enough of the Phillies right now. I took this picture about 2 months ago at Phillies Photo Day and it's the first thing I thought of when the magazine cover was assigned. So I had an idea and a photo to go with it at the beginning. I like that he's pointing out to grab readers' attention. I did the yellow "blast" thing because it really stands out to get attention and it makes the backgound of the photo a lot less intrusive. It really makes it less loud. And I put the main story at the bottom of the magazine because Chase Utley points down to "NL WILD CARD" which is what is most important to this team right now. I moved "Weekly" behind his head because it gave me more space for teases, and the fact that the magazine is a weekly is not that important. It can still be read, but the important thing in the title is that the magazine is about the Phillies. I chose the font colors to go with Phillies team colors. The red font and stroke is from a spot on his jersey, and the blue font and stroke is from a spot on the Phillies stars in the title.

question about posting our final magazine cover

I know that the magazine covers are due before class on Friday, but I don't know what needs to be included when we post the covers.

Do we just post the magazine cover? Or do we have to put the title and our name and the photographer of the photo and stuff like that on the post?

what i have so far

Looking for some comments. I know I need 2 more teasers, not sure how I'm going to do that yet, but I was wondering what you think of the nameplate being smaller than usual. I typically see nameplates go across the entire page, but I didn't think that looked right on mine, so I made it smaller. Also, does anyone see any stray from the CRAP model?

thanks in advance!

Magazine Cover Project (Project no. 1)

J-152 Section 1

Magazine Cover Project (Project no. 1)

Requirements:

Size
The document must be 8.5 inches wide and 11 inches tall. No substitutes.

Photograph
There should be one main photograph on the cover of your magazine. There can be more than one but this is not a necessity and you WILL NOT get any extra points for using extra photos. This is a creative decision.

Banner/Nameplate (whatever you want to call it)
Your nameplate is everything that goes into the title of your magazine (ie Elle, Maxim, Time). As for your magazines you will make a new nameplate for a new magazine. Do not recreate Sports Illustrated or ESPN magazine. If you are making a sports magazine come up with a NEW name.
All of the design elements come into effect here (size of your nameplate, size of the text in your nameplate, font color, anything that you can/want to do to make your nameplate look good)

Teasers
Teasers are the text items on the front of a magazine that 'tease' you into the stories inside. For you, and this may be different for Dannell's sections so don't be alarmed, you need a minimum of THREE teasers and a maximum of FIVE teasers. Any more will lose points as will not having at least three. Again, font size, color, placement, everything comes into play here. CRAP!

Extras
There are countless extras that can go into the front of a magazine. I want to see what your imagination and your knowledge of magazines can come up with. What else goes onto the front of a magazine? (Hint: I am talking about things like the bar code and such)

Remember you are DESIGNING so BE CREATIVE…have fun and envision your project and work to get it done that way. Don't just get to a point where something gets hard and you give up. Ask questions, post to the blog, send me an E-mail, send the class an E-mail. ASK TRY ASK..that’s the only way you will learn. (That and actually opening the program)

REMINDERS

1. EVERYTHING goes on a new layer STARTING WITH YOUR MAIN PHOTO. Don't set your photo as you background cause then you will lose control of it for the duration and will have to start over. Set the background as a white/clear layer and LAYER 1 should be your photo.
2. Edit your photos separate from your mag cover project. Get them ready first, then start laying out.

This is all that is coming to me right now…anything else I will send more later.

GOOD LUCK!
